Sister Janet Connorton (formerly Sister Marcella)

“It is no wonder that I became a Sister of Saint Joseph. My father’s aunt and his sister were Sisters of Saint Joseph of Rochester: Sister Fabian McGrath and Sister Agnes Leona Connorton.

“My years of teaching I call the “Triple A”–St. Anne, St. Ambrose and St. Agnes High School in Rochester. The next 20 years were at DeSales High School in Geneva, NY. In the high schools, the assignment was art teacher, yearbook moderator, artist-in-residence and keeper of any supplies that anyone needed! Each place brings many happy memories of wonderful people and delightful times.

“Living in Sacred Heart parish in Rochester and in Geneva’s parishes, involved me with liturgy and choirs. These were great experiences which prepared me for the next assignment.

“Two of our Sisters gave a presentation inviting us to think about Brazil. I thought about it right away! I spent seven happy years as pastoral agent in Jardim Curitiba, Goias.

“On returning to the USA, a Sister invited me to ‘think about Alabama.’ I completed 13 years working in the Edmundite Southern Missions: 10years in Pine Apple Adult Day Care and three in Selma with lively senior citizens as Activity Assistant.

“After returning to Rochester, I was involved in Motherhouse services and now continue my prayer and presence ministry with the Sisters and staff.”
