Sister Barbara Lum (formerly Sister Eleanor)

“As a Catholic Sister of Saint Joseph of Rochester and a Registered Nurse, from 1958 to 1968I was privileged and forever influenced by our work at Good Samaritan Hospital in Selma, AL admitting patients of color from several surrounding counties when other hospitals would not admit Black patients. Good Samaritan Sisters and staff cared for those brutally beaten by state troopers and sheriff’s deputies interrupting the peaceful march for voting rights on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965.

“I have enjoyed and been inspired living with Sisters at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elizabeth in Selma, St. Monica, Blessed Sacrament, Peck Street and St. Boniface Convents. At St. Boniface we often share life with college students and offer programs for high school and college students through the SSJ Volunteer Corps.

“Other nursing positions included Good Samaritan School of Practical Nursing in Selma, St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, University of Rochester Nursing and Nurse Practitioner, and Rochester Educational Opportunity Center.

“Currently, I volunteer at St. Joseph’s Northside in Rochester, a neighborhood much affected by drugs, prostitution and violence. We are a drop-in ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph attempting to offer peace and welcome to all our dear neighbors.”
