Sister Alice Marie Kurtz

“As I reflect on my 60 years as a Sister of Saint Joseph, I pray in gratitude for the many ways God has blessed my journey.

“My formative years in the rural community of Wayland, NY grounded me in the strong-life values of continually nurturing faith, family, and friends. My parents, relatives, and the neighboring community exemplified a strong work ethic. This was rooted in their dependence on a loving, provident God and an awareness of a responsibility to care for and share with one another in good times and bad. In addition, my eight years of elementary education at St. Joseph School were enriched by Sisters of Saint Joseph who reinforced these values and provided a loving, joyful presence.

“As Sisters of Saint Joseph, we are called to live according to the gospel and to work to unite the dear neighbor with God and with one another through our presence, service, and prayer. Most of my years of ministry have been in education–as an elementary school teacher (St. Mary, Elmira; St. Mary, Canandaigua; St. Francis DeSales, Geneva); administrative assistant (Nazareth Hall and Hope Hall, Rochester); and principal (St. Casimir, Elmira; St. Mary, Auburn; St. Mary, Canandaigua); and most recently from1997-2018 as a collegiate academic administrator at the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. Currently, I provide administrative support at Nazareth Elementary School.

“Throughout my life, I have tried to share my blessings, and, in turn, I have been blessed with a wealth of encounters and relationships that have showed me God’s love and compassion.”
