Hearing Her Voice - Stories of Our Sisters

In her heart, mind, and soul, every one of our Sisters follows the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That call, the voice driving her, helps each Sister find that niche, her own particular challenge. Whether it is heard in teaching the "unteachable," nurturing the physically distressed, or feeding the hungry, each particular cadence resonates with hope.

Sister Maureen Halack

"Come follow me". These words I heard over and over as a young child when I felt I was being called to be a Sister of St. Joseph. I grew up in a family that was quite religious. God and church were an integral part of our life. Then in elementary school and high school, I had the Sisters of St. Joseph as wonderful role models. Their life exemplified dedication to God expressed in our Constitutions through "gentleness, peace and joy."

Teaching has been my main ministry throughout my religious life. I've worked with first and second graders, pre-schoolers and spent fifteen years "serving the dear neighbor" in the heart of the inner city. This was followed by three-and-a-half years working with special needs children. One of the significant times in my teaching career was preparing children for First Eucharist. For the past twenty-five years, I have been working in a Montessori environment where children learn at their own pace while using special materials designed to meet the intellectual abilities of specific age groups.

Most of all, however, my greatest blessing has been living with a group of God-seeking women, sharing our joys and sorrows, experiencing a life of trust, mutual respect, and a deep love for God, each other, and those we serve.
